The Fame of Chess Today

Chess is one of a recreational board games played by two players on a checkered square with alternate white and black squares called chessboard and with sixty-four squares equally arranged in an eight by eight grid. Each player controls sixteen pieces in black or in white color. The pieces consists of one king, one queen, two rooks or others called the towers, two knights, two bishops and eight pawns in each color (black and white). The games’ objective is to strategically checkmate the opponent’s king, by whom you immediately attack (“check”) the king and there’s no other movement that he can be out of that attack or in other words he is checkmate. It is easy and very simple to understand despite of detailed moving patterns of the pieces. The players can master the basics for merely 5 minutes for its easy-to-learn approach and take only a little effort.

According to history, chess emanates in India during the Gupta Empire. Its early form in the 6th century was known as caturanga which means the infantry, cavalry, elephants and chariots- the four divisions of their military that are represented by the pieces known as the pawn, knight, bishop and rook today. It progressed to develop and transformed through time as our chess today.

Millions of people around the world play chess either in competitions or tournaments, in clubs, by correspondence or just at home. Chess is one of the most popular games on board played today. People have developed comprehensive and extensive chess strategies and tactics to really understand and play the game well. People playing chess in tournaments gets popular, respected and idolized too.

Playing chess becomes popular because it somehow enhance your strategic planning by setting and be able to achieve a long term goals during the game, such as the placing of different pieces while thinking of the tactics on concentrating on immediate maneuvers. It exercises our mind and of course brings excitement because there are numerous things that could happen while playing the game. Competition of players can provide substantial intellectual stimulation. The players are given the right to craft their strategies and tactics making it more enjoyable to all.

The popularity of chess today is great because not only it is fun and an enjoyable game but also for the improvement of one’s discipline and most of all because it is a game similar to our daily life. The movement of the pieces is like the movement of our life. We take control and decide the best way we can reach our goal and beat all the hindrances that come in the way. Sometimes we make sacrifices just to attain our goal. The problems in chess are like our own problems, making it hard for us to get to our goal. Chess game helps us train our mind to come up with the best possible solution to those problems. This help us to adapt to any circumstances and weigh the pros and cons before taking the actual action that enable us to become better and smarter people for it. This is the reason why for hundreds of years and for so many cultures, chess remained and has been a part of it and should continue to exist in years to come and to cultures that will develop.
